True to its vision of developing new generation leaders for school transformation, the National Centre for
School Leadership (NCSL), NIEPA is deeply engaged with building capacities of school heads across the
country. In order to achieve this, the Centre has designed practice centric capacity building programmes
for school heads, based on a curriculum that is grounded in the needs and issues of the states and the
diversity therein, in the area of school education. At the same time, the Centre also encourages networking
among schools and related resource institutions so as to facilitate meaningful exchange of experiences,
lateral learning and shared problem-solving. NCSL had started to engage with states since the year 2011-
12. Over the year 2018-19, the Centre had developed State Resource Groups in 36 states and UTs,
building their capacities on the Handbook on school leadership development. It was also expected that the
State Resource Group would have had first-hand experience in transacting the leadership curriculum with
the school heads and initiating them in their journey towards school transformation. It is heartening to
know that states have intensively involved in building the capacity of school heads at both elementary and
secondary level. It was felt that a few school heads who have attempted change processes in their schools,
could be invited to the National Workshop to share how the school leadership development curriculum has
equipped them with knowledge, skills and new set of attitudes to bring about transformation of their
schools. The National Centre for School Leadership had requested school heads/principals across the
states to narrate their reflections on the work carried out by them in their school, post-capacity building
programme on school leadership development as well as share their expectations from the School
Leadership Development Programme. Once these narratives were received at the National level, few of
the school heads/ principals were identified to share their observations in the National Workshop. This has
been a challenging task and would not have been possible without the vision and guidance of Prof. N. V.
Varghese Vice-Chancellor, NIEPA, Prof. Rashmi Diwan, NCSL, NIEPA and Dr. Kashyapi Awasthi,
Assistant Professor, NCSL-NIEPA in conceptualizing the document. The NCSL team has been an
encouraging support, bringing together different flavours from states and helping in the development of
this document. The efforts of Dr. Monika Batham, (Project Consultant), NCSL-NIEPA in compiling,
content development and editing of the document have given it a presentable shape. Designing of the
booklet is done by Ms.Vibhuti Anand, Project Consultant (Graphic Designer), NCSL-NIEPA and
Formatting is done by Mr.Vinod Jajoria, (Data Entry Operator).
