Abstract
The initial changes to the school environment were inspired by a CD on BALA. The change was
initiated in 2005. Since then the school has included a mini museum that displays old artifacts and
a beautiful garden. One main feature of the school that makes it different from others is well
maintained record. Every type of records can be found out in a single minute with the help of self
made super index. The environment of the school has attracted children to come to school and in
turn has reduced drop out. As most children belong to the community of farmers, the school has
also initiated to create organic fertilizer/vermin compost. Mass illiteracy among guardians had
become a big hurdle so they tried to pursue those guardians to send their children to school. Till
now more than 3000 visitors have visited our school and made satisfactory remarks about the
change of the school. The school also boasts of a student parliament.
Socio-Cultural Context of the School
The name of the school is Jangalpara M.V. School which is situated at Jangalpara near Kharupetia,
Darrang. Most of the people belong to Minority community (Muslim). Educationally and
economically these people are very poor and backward. People are surrounded with different types of
misbelieve and distrust. Culturally these people are not rich. The prime languages of this community
are Bengali and Assamese. They even do not know our national language (Hindi) clearly. The prime
dresses of these people are lungi, kurta, saree burkha naqab salwar kamij etc. Most of the people are
wage earners who are less aware about education and its benefit in the society. These people have far
and wide knowledge about farming. We aim at mingling their knowledge with education.
Challenges for the School
Initially these people were not so much concern about education, as a Head of the School along with
the other authority of school we had to console those uninterested parents and guardians of the
students to let their children learn in a good environment because these guardians and parents prefer
their children to work in different field to earn some money rather than sending them to school. (As we
have already mentioned that these people are wage earner). Many guardians sent their children out of
the State like Kerala, Karnataka, and Bengaluru etc. to work and earn some money which is the chief
cause of illiteracy in our locality. Another important aspect of these people is the barrier of child
marriage. We brought awareness among these people to stop this thing and already we succeeded to
reduce it.
