SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PRACTICES IN TELANGANA STATE
The review cum feedback workshops of SRGs conducted in September, 2018 and
February, 2019 as a follow up of programme on School Leadership Development
programme reflected a change in the perception of the School Heads on their role as
School Leaders. Many of the School Leaders are putting tireless efforts in transforming
their respective schools in various aspects ranging from provision of infrastructural
facilities, team building, and leading teaching learning process to self-development and
building partnerships with all stake holders. In good number of schools Vision and
Mission of the school is spelt out reflecting the aspirations of the stake holders of the
school. A few schools have also prepared logo of the school.
Many School Heads recognized that SLDP brought remarkable difference in their
attitudes and approach in School Governance. It helped in honing of the skills of
distributive leadership& planning, prioritization of needs and tasks, and time
management. The programme has created a sense among them to lead the innovations in
School Management practices and in conduct of academic activities.
From these workshops, it is observed that a large number of School Heads have
realized that students’ regularity to the schools will have its effect on learning. Therefore,
many of the School Heads took the issue of increase in pupil attendance as one of the
main interventions in the agenda of the School Development. For which, different
strategies are evolved such as meeting of parents personally, maintaining WhatsApp
group of parents alerting the parents about the students’ absence, making this issue as an
agenda of the SMC meetings. The focus was not only on attendance, but also on the
effective classroom transaction and thereupon pupil learning. Quite a few School Heads
took this issue seriously and started observing classroom transactions, and those who are
already in the process have increased the frequency of classroom observation. The
process is not ended with just observation; it is followed by feedback and mentoring for
improvement of teaching learning process in an amicable environment with mutual
understanding. It is also observed that the School Heads are keen on utilization of
available digital resources for qualitative change in teaching learning process. Emphasis
has been given for holding digital classes regularly, with definite time schedule for every
class.
Many of the School Heads have realized that acquisition of basic skills like
reading, writing and simple arithmetic is the pre-requisite for the learner to pursue one’s
learning independently and for self -learning process. For obvious and varied reasons, the
schools working in Government sector are facing learning crises. To avert this
phenomenon, many School Heads have focused on attainment of 3-R’s as one of the
major initiatives. In many schools, to develop writing skills among the students, practice
