of writing of diaries by students and recording of daily events is put into practice. It is
believed, that this practice helps to improve the writing skills and power of expression. It
also helps the parents/ guardians to keep abreast of activities of the school.
A few schools have even extended their academic support to primary schools to
improve the classroom processes and learning levels of the children. Adoption of children
by teaching staff members is being practiced, in many schools, particularly with respect
to low achievers.
Further, certain innovative practices to make the school assembly more interesting
and vibrant are included in certain schools. Punctuality and discipline are being
emphasized. The staff and the students are insisted to attend the school assembly on time.
The School Heads taking lead in attending the school at least half an hour before the
commencement of school assembly. This act has its impact on the orderly conduct of
school assembly in their respective schools.
There is a spurt in conduct of various activities at school level such as celebrating
the days and events having National and International importance and other Co-curricular
activities. A large number of schools have put the efforts to improve the school ambience,
particularly in terms of green cover. The participation of the schools is found to be very
effective in State flagship programme ‘Haritha Haaram’.
In many schools, school cabinets are being formed on different tasks like the
maintenance of library, monitoring of midday meals, school sanitation, kitchen gardening
etc. The School Heads felt that these school cabinets helped to create a sense of
responsibility, ownership and for nurturing leadership qualities among student
community.
With regard to working with the teachers, it is evident there is a major shift in their
relationships, where trust, responsibility, team work is given primacy in one to one
relationship. It is observed that Staff meetings are being conducted regularly, and the
agenda of the staff meetings is being fixed in consultation with staff. Democratic process
is being percolated in the conduct of staff meeting, which is found to be noted in
distribution of work and fixation of responsibility among staff members. Transparency is
being maintained in dealing with the aspects of financial management. The same spirit is
evident in the conduct of School Management Committee meetings. Some schools are
taking the support of NGOs in introducing successful pedagogical interventions for
academic improvement.
The involvement of community is found to be high in school developmental
access, which is more focused on providing infrastructural facilities, furniture, RO water
plants, supporting nutrition supplements in midday meals, providing digital equipment
and computer labs. It is observed that the schools were used to work in isolation, but now
an organic link has been established between school and community. Many problems
related to sanitation, drinking water are being resolved with the help of local community
